PETER CAPTAIN
Louden, Alaska

Peter Captain, Louden, Alaska. First Chief of his tribal council since 1995. He is a leader in the drive to eliminate “snowbirds” (plastic bags) from his community of Galena, and is an active member of the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council (YRITWC). A historic Accord between the Alaska Native tribes and Canada’s First Nations governments was signed in 2001, in which all parties committed to the maintenance of the environmental integrity of the Yukon River. The Council also works with government and other organizations in monitoring the watershed.
