Russell
Jim, Yakama Nation, Washington. As the head of his
tribe’s Environmental and Waste Management
Program, he has battled tirelessly to educate people
about the Hanford Nuclear Reservation and its damage
to the land and society. In 2002 he accepted the
Beeson Peace Award before an audience of 400 physicians,
academics and cultural leaders in an eloquent oration
that called for restoration of the Yakama Nation’s
natural resources, foods and medicines from damage
caused to them by high and low level radiation from
the Hanford facilities.
