Pico, Viejas Band of Kumeyaay, California. Chairman
of the Viejas Band for almost 25 years, he led his
people from poverty and despair to a time of economic
independence, initially through gaming, and now
through a variety of economic projects, which he
enjoys developing and sustaining. Pico often relates
the story of his own struggles; he is particularly
gratified that the Viejas Band is now providing
a scholarship fund for every child on the reservation
for higher education or for doctorate, if they desire
it.
