S.
Timothy Wapato, a member of the Colville Confederated
Tribes in Washington state, has been a Pacific Northwest
and national leader in tribal issues. He served
as Executive Director for Columbia River Inter-Tribal
Fish Commission in the 1980s where he was involved
in natural resources, particularly salmon, and Indian
treaty rights protection. Presidents Reagan and
Bush, Sr. appointed Wapato as the U.S. Commissioner
for the Pacific Salmon Commission, a body that oversees
the international salmon fishing treaty between
the U.S. and Canada. Wapato also served as Commissioner
for the Administration for Native Americans in the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services In
Washington, DC. In the 1990s, he served as the Executive
Director of National Indian Gaming Association and
as Director of the Inter-Tribal Bison Cooperative.
He has been a tireless advocate for tribal sovereignty
and for native peoples at the international, national,
regional, and state levels.
