Robert
Yazzie, Chief Justice of the Navajo Nation from
1992 – 2003, has been a powerful force in
integrating traditional Navajo law and peacemaking
techniques into the Nation’s court system.
A unique integration of Western law and Navajo traditional
law occurs every day in the Navajo Nation’s
court system. Yazzie has lectured extensively on
Navajo justice to judges, academics, and even prison
wardens. Since 1992 the Navajo Supreme Court has
held over a dozen sessions in off-reservation venues,
enabling many people to gain an understanding of
the Nation’s unique justice system. Yazzie
will devote his “retirement” years to
the education of Indian youth and the concerns of
indigenous peoples in other countries.
